An experimental study on bone union of autogenous and homogenous bone graft

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to observe the process of bone union of autogenous and homogenous bone graft.
Ten dogs weighing about ten to twelve kg were used for this study.
Under the general anesthesia with Ketamine-Hcl, bone excision of 10 x 7mm in size was made in the right and left femur of each dog.
The autogenous and homogenous bone graft taken from both right and left side of femur were transplanted to the opposite and another graft bed of femur.
The animals were sacrificed on the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th week after the operation and the transplanted bone graft and their surrounding tissues were removed in block.
The blocks were decalcified and embedded in paraffin. The paraffin sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin.
The results were as follows;
1. New bone formation and bone union were appeared better in autogenous graft than homogenous graft.
2. The grafted bone was resorbed and replaced with newly formed bone trabeculae.
3. New bone formation was progressed favorably at the bone marrow, periosteum and endosteum.
4. Bone union was closely related to blood supply.
